Synopsis:
It took nearly
15-years and his own financial backing for actor Robert Duvall to
bring this drama to the screen. Duvall not only directed and wrote
the film's screenplay but also plays Eulis "Sonny" Dewey, a Pentecostal
preacher in Texas with a good congregation, a beautiful wife (Farrah
Fawcett) and two nice kids. Called to God after a narrow escape during
childhood, Dewey is a passionate man whose convictions at time seem
to border on madness. His carefully ordered world shatters abruptly
when he learns that his wife is carrying on with Horace (Todd Allen)
a younger preacher who, thanks to Dewey's wife, has manipulated the
church laws into obtaining the congregation for himself. Devastated
and nearly berserk with anger, Dewey vents his rage at a little-league
game and leaves Horace in a coma. Deeply confused, Dewey flees to
Louisiana where he assumes an alias, rebaptizes himself as "The Apostle"
and after befriending a retired small-town minister lands part-time
work as a mechanic and gets a radio spot on which to preach. He convinces
his new friend to help him get a new congregation and then embarks
upon a radio campaign to rebuild an abandoned old church in the country.
His newfound fire goes a long way towards vanquishing his many demons,
and he soon has all he ever wanted until his vengeful wife appears
to make trouble.
